TIME TO DIVERSIFY THE MARKET 

Businesses and governments are reminded by economists to diversify markets therefore as not to concentrate on China and India. It is also time for the government to implement a strategy to reduce dependence on revenue from the coal sector, by gradually lowering production and coal use targets. (Bisnis)


JANUARY-JULY EXPORTS DECREASING AT 21.74% 

Quoting the data from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS), there was a decrease in coal exports throughout January to July 2025. The value of exports decreased approximately at 21.74% compared to last year's period to US$13.82 billion and export volume decreased at 6.96%. (Kontan) 

 

INDONESIA REMAINING AS A MAJOR PLAYER 

The decease in the value of exports in 2025, which reached at 21.74%, more reflects the price dynamics in the uncertain international market than the decrease in demand for Indonesian coal. GLOBAL COAL PRICES WEAKENED 

The average coal price at the global level reached at US$64.37 per ton. It decreased at 9.64% cumulatively from US$71.24 per ton in January—July 2025. According to the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Indonesia, the decrease in exports can not be separated from the weakening demand of China and India are increase up coal production in the domestic country. INCREASING THE COAL CONSUMPTION TAX 

The Indian government recently increased the coal consumption tax to 18% from the the previous at 5%. Therefore, according to analysts, buyers will no longer have to pay a flat carbon tax at INR 400 (US$4.57) per metric ton, known as a cess that makes prices cheaper despite rising consumption taxes. COAL EXPORT VOLUME CONTRACTED 

The Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded that coal export volume reached at 214.71 million tons or contracted at 6.96% Year on year (YoY) per July 2025. Meanwhile, in September, it is predicted that there will be potential for collective wholesale action ahead of the national day long holiday in early October. (Kontan) 

 

DECREASING STOCKS, CONSUMPTION, OUTPUT 

Coal stocks in 493 power plants surveyed by Mysteel decreased from 100.3 million tons in early August to 96.49 million tons per August 29th. Daily consumption weakened from 4.67 million tons in the middle of the month to 4.32 million tons. Average output from the 462 mines monitored reached at 5.5 million tonnes per day, It decreased from 5.7 million tonnes in July and below the annual average at 5.6 million tons. (Investor.id)

 

DECREASING NET INCOME 

PT Golden Energy Mines Tbk. recorded a net profit at IDR2.46 trillion in the first semester of 2025. It decreased at 52.14% from the same period last year. While the net profit of PT Alamtri Resources Indonesia Tbk was at 77.54% to IDR2.83 trillion. PT Adaro Andalan Indonesia recorded a decrease in net profit to IDR6.91 trillion. And Baramulti's net profit decreased at 38.18%. (Bisnis)

 

INDONESIA AFFECTED BY INDIAN TAX REVISION

Global coal prices slumped again after India revised tax rules. Indonesia is one of the biggest victims of this policy, where local coal in India is more competitive than imports, therefore import demand has dropped. CONTROLLING THE PRODUCTION CONTROLLING THE PRICE 

Vice Chairman for Association of Indonesian Energy, Mineral and Coal Suppliers (Aspebindo), Fathul Nugroho, said that production control amid the decrease in coal exports for the January-July 2025 period was an effective measure to control prices, as it balances supply and demand in the market. COAL SALES REACH AT 65.82% 

Coal sales, both export and domestic, were reported at 486.76 million tons or 65.82% of this year's target. Analysts projected that sales will be at the level of 99% or at 730 million tons. (Bisnis)


OPPORTUNITIES FOR INCREASING THE COAL EXPORT 

APBI-ICMA sees that opportunities to increase Indonesian coal exports are still open, amid increasing demand from Malaysia and South Korea. Winter season factor, increase in space heating needs, industrial recovery is expected to drive demand. (Bisnis)

 

ORGANIC FERTILIZER FROM COAL 

PT Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk stated that it will sell low-calorie coal downstream products in the form of organic fertilizer called BA Grow. This product is based on potassium Humate, a compound extracted from lignite or low calorie coal, and it has obtained a permit including decree of the Minister of Agriculture No. 261/KPTS/SR.310/M/4/2019. NATURAL PRICE OCCURING THE DEPRECIATION (1) 

A number of coal issuers have occurred price depreciation throughout the current year 2025. PT Adaro Andalan Indonesia Tbk occurred a price correction up to 14.45% throughout the current year 2025 (YtD) to a level at IDR7, 250 per share. PT Indo Tambangraya Megah Tbk. corrected at 16.29% YtD to IDR22, 350 per share. (Bisnis)


OCCURRING THE PRICE DEPRECIATION (2) 

PT Alamtri Resources Indonesia Tbk or even PT United Tractors Tbk occurred the price depreciation throughout the current year 2025. They occurred a correction at 27.57% and 5.32%, respectively. This was reported by the press. (Bisnis)


COAL EXPORTS DECREASING AT 8.54% 

Coal export performance of South Sumatra province decreased. Launching data from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the period from January to July 2025, it is known that the export reached at US$1,373.81 million. COAL PRODUCTION IN 3 COUNTRIES
